Everything starts with simple drawing. Despite working within a digital space for over twenty years it is still the initial mark-making of ink, or pencil, on paper that is the most intuitive of starting points.

Usually, especially for commissioned works, or when an idea needs to be clearly defined, drawings are quite deliberate with an eye on accuracy and clear delineation. In recent years however I've started to keep sketchbooks of less conscious drawings - not exactly automatic drawing but a step in that direction. These are really exploratory drawings, usually (but not always) without any direct observation - in the words of Paul Klee, 'taking a line for a walk'.
